Biography:

Marthe Guillain was a Belgian painter and watercolorist born in Charleroi in 1890. She studied at the university of the work of Charleroi with the painter Léon Van den Houten. She perfected to the drawing at Fernand Cormon in Paris. In 1917, Marthe Guillain met the Fauve artist Médard Maertens, who will become her husband. The couple lived in Paris and frequented artists as Fernand Léger, Paul Signac, Maurice de Vlaminck, Suzanne Valadon and Chaim Soutine. Her main personal exhibitions were, Charleroi in 1944, the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles in 1949 and her retrospective in 1973, to Watermael-Boitsfort.
